She Passed Away Before Getting A Yearbook, So Her Classmates Did Something Beautiful

When it comes to illnesses, few are as devastating and relentless as cancer. Worst of all is when cancer takes the lives of young people. Treatment is almost as harmful as the disease itself, since chemotherapy is notoriously hard on the body. The good news is that alternative treatments are on the rise, and they take much less of a physical toll on recipients.

One such treatment is stem cell therapy. A Canadian girl by the name of Laura Hiller — who had previously undergone chemotherapy for her aggressive form of leukemia — was placed on the donor list for stem cell therapy. She then received the wonderful news that they’d found a match for her, but because of hospital bed shortages, her treatment kept getting pushed back.

Because of these crippling shortages, the young woman sadly passed away on January 20, 2016. She was 18 years old.

The teen, known for her exuberance, didn’t get a chance to walk across the graduation stage. She also never got to experience the unique excitement that comes along with passing around yearbooks at the end of senior year.

For that reason, classmates created a beautiful tribute for Laura before they said their final goodbyes. Even though they couldn’t sign her yearbook, they filled the surface of her coffin with everything that they never got to say to her.

It’s always so sad to see young people go, and Laura Hiller’s case is made all the more tragic by the fact that shortcomings in the healthcare system ultimately failed her in the most profound way. What’s clear in all of this is that Laura was so loved by everyone around her.

To learn more about Laura’s story, be sure to check out her family’s Facebook page. After experiencing the heartbreaking reality of systemic deficiencies in the healthcare system, her loved ones have made it their mission to spread awareness about these deadly wait times.
