The Inside Of This Abandoned Asylum Is Just As Unsettling As You’d Expect
Most people wouldn’t feel comfortable wandering around an abandoned mental asylum. Horror movies have taught us that it’s never a good idea!
The photographer behind Freaktography, however, isn’t just anybody. He toes the line between totally creepy and hauntingly beautiful all the time. And this photo set from Buffalo, New York, is no exception…
Armed with nothing more than a camera, Freaktography ventured into the Buffalo State Asylum in New York. The facility had been abandoned since the mid-1970s.
The series of buildings is now considered a historic landmark known as the “Richardson Olmsted Complex.” There are plans to turn it into a resort and conference center, but renovations are far from over.
In fact, much of Buffalo State Asylum has been untouched for over 40 years.

As a result, dust, decay, and (most likely) rats have taken over.
At one time, patients were segregated by sex. Males lived on the east side of the facility, while females were located on the west.
There was also a children’s ward. A deteriorating picture of Lucy and Charlie Brown can still be seen on the walls.
Freaktography didn’t run across any ghosts or evil spirits, but he did find this unsettling skeleton.
He also explored the labyrinth of tunnels under the facility, which staff once used to move from place to place.
The hospital even had its very own barber shop. It’s wild to think that no one has sat in this chair for more than four decades.
There’s no telling when (or if) the facility will be fully renovated. Clearly, a ton of work would have to be done to get this place up and running again. Not to mention, there’s always the chance of stirring up angry spirits!
